If you're gonna be pedantic about things, I'd like to point out "from downtown" is explicable.

Since most probably announcers live in the suburbs, then it makes sense to them that "from downtown" is a synonym for something that is far away.

While most NBA arenas are located within city limits, very few are located directly downtown. If a player is shooting from "downtown," this implies that he could be several blocks away, and probably scoring some blow at the same time.
